ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE USAGE POLICY

The Al-Najam Journal of Medical and Life Sciences (ANJMLS) adheres to recognized principles of publication ethics and responsible scholarly communication regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted technologies in research and publishing.

Purpose, Scope, and Human Accountability

This policy outlines the permitted and prohibited uses of generative artificial intelligence (AI), large language models (LLMs), chatbots, and AI-assisted technologies during manuscript preparation, submission, peer review, editorial assessment, and publication.

⚠️ Human Authorship and Accountability:
AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors because they cannot assume responsibility for the accuracy, integrity, originality, or ethical compliance of scholarly work. Human authors remain fully responsible for all submitted content, including material prepared or assisted by AI.

Guidelines for Authors and AI-Assisted Content

✓ Permitted Uses

Authors may use AI-assisted tools for language improvement, grammar correction, spelling, readability enhancement, translation, and similar editorial support.

AI-assisted tools may also be used for appropriate formatting or presentation enhancement of conceptual diagrams and graphical materials, provided that the underlying scientific information is not fabricated, altered, or misrepresented.

✕ Prohibited Uses

  • Fabrication or falsification of research data, results, references, or scientific evidence.
  • Generation of misleading, inaccurate, or unverifiable scientific or clinical claims.
  • Manipulation of scientific figures, graphs, images, or experimental results in a manner that changes or misrepresents the underlying findings.
  • Listing AI systems as authors or co-authors in the manuscript, metadata, or publication record.
Mandatory AI Disclosure:

Any substantive use of generative AI or AI-assisted technologies beyond routine spelling, grammar, or language correction should be disclosed during submission and documented in the manuscript where appropriate. Authors should identify the tool used and briefly explain its purpose.

Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies

Suggested disclosure wording:

"During the preparation of this manuscript, the author(s) used [TOOL NAME / VERSION] for [SPECIFY PURPOSE]. The author(s) reviewed, verified, and edited the resulting material and remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the final published work."

If no generative AI or AI-assisted technologies were used, authors may state that no such technologies were used in the preparation of the manuscript.

Confidentiality Requirements for Reviewers and Editors

Peer Reviewers

Reviewers must maintain strict confidentiality. They should not upload, copy, paste, or otherwise disclose manuscript text, data, figures, supplementary files, or unpublished findings to public or commercial generative AI systems where confidentiality cannot be assured.

Editors & Editorial Board Members

Editors and editorial board members must protect confidential manuscript information and must not enter unpublished author materials into external AI systems where confidentiality, data protection, or intellectual-property safeguards are inadequate.

Policy Violations and Compliance

Failure to disclose substantive AI use, use of AI to fabricate or manipulate scientific content, or deceptive use of AI-assisted technologies may constitute a breach of publication ethics. Depending on the circumstances, ANJMLS may request clarification or correction, reject a manuscript, investigate a published article, or take appropriate post-publication action in accordance with applicable ethical standards.

Policy Updates: ANJMLS may periodically review and update this policy as AI technologies and scholarly publishing standards evolve.
